Get to know your studio teachers - Gee Hill
Get to know your teachers at Victoria Rose Pilates Studio…
Gee hill, a brilliant bright matwork and reformer teacher, sat down with me to chat all things Pilates and more, have a read to get to know her better!
Welcome Gee! So tell me about your Pilates journey
I first started Pilates when in drama school, it wasn’t necessarily coined as Pilates then but it was conditioning with the same principles, to help with core and breathing throughout theatre.
I continued practicing Pilates after drama school and found it so beneficial.
I find Pilates really peaceful because of the mind body connection. For my self practice it’s a bit more of a spiritual practice, even though it doesn’t have spiritual roots, because it allows me to focus on my breath and take time out of my day - it’s a great way to connect to myself.
I am also hypermobile and used to do lots of hot yoga, but that was actually quite damaging on my body, so I found Pilates was a better fit for me personally. It helped to stabilise my joints and strengthen around the areas I needed most.
When did you know you wanted to teach the method?
Probably near the end of 2024. I was enjoying practicing Pilates and decided to take my Matwork qualification. I then met you (Victoria) and came to classes at the studio whilst I was learning that certification.
I started teaching in August 2025 and also added a Reformer course into the mix too!
I wanted to connect with other people who taught Pilates and so really enjoyed coming to your studio and learning from you. I think it’s really nice when you go somewhere and you’ve learnt under the people who you then get to work with, because you’ve seen both sides of the journey which is really fun.
It means that there are people in the classes that I practiced with and now get to teach! Which is really nice as they know you not just as a teacher but as someone who worked alongside them struggling through exercises! So you have a mutual understanding.
You also offer health coaching right?
Yes, I have been health coaching since 2024.
I wanted to look at something I could build into my practice alongside it, as I work with clients that have really stressful jobs and I am trying to encourage them to move more but I wanted something that wasn’t as exhausting as high intensity training. Some of them might not even have the capacity to look at strength training and they just need something to focus on that makes their overall lifestyle better.
It’s connecting that time for yourself, working the body but not in a way that is going to destroy it. I find Pilates can offer more of a healing system.
Pilates is quite holistic, and coming from a holistic health coaching background I thought it would be a good addition.
What can people expect from your classes?
My classes are energetic and fun. Someone said to me the other day that you teach with such ‘flare’, which made me laugh.
I aim to bring a good vibe and energy, especially early morning. I want you to get up and start your day in the right way. I know what that feels like, I typically train at 7 o’clock in the morning.
I want everyone to leave feeling ready to tackle the day!
What kind of teacher would you say you are? Could you describe your style in 3 words?
Silly. Informative. Energetic.
I like to let people know the why. I like to break it down in a way that helps them to understand it better. Not in a way that is really scientific, but I break it down in laymen's terms so everyone can get it and really understand the movement.
So when you aren’t doing Pilates what can you be found doing?
Walking my dog, I’ve got a gorgeous little whippet.
Crossfit, I love crossfit. So things like olympic lifting, gymnastics, typical strength training.
Singing, acting. I love doing theatre!
Wild swimming, travelling oh and renovating my van. We are currently renovating our van into a camper.
I love cooking and cheffing it up! Baking sourdough.
Will you bring some sourdough to classes?!
Yes!! That would be great especially for the early morning gang.
Thank you Gee for taking the time to sit with me and chat all things Pilates.
